The Chairperson of The Cheapest Smartphone In The World, The 'Freedom 251', That Would Have cost Rs.251, Mohit Goel Is Now In Jail For Fraud.

Mohit Goel, the man behind the tech firm Ringing Bells, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police yesterday based on a complaint from a dealer who said he only received a payment of only Rs 14 lakhs in new phones and cash.

The dealer was expecting a refund for the unfulfilled order, which Mr. Goel and other executives failed to do so and in return threatened to kill him and his family members.

Ringing Bells and Mr. Goel made headlines last year as they unveiled the worlds’ cheapest smartphone the “Freedom 251”. The phone generated a high demand due to its price and was also the focus of scrutiny from regulators.

The arrest transpired after it was fond that a dealer paid Rs. 30 lakhs for an order of handsets but did not receive the full order from Ringing Bells and did not receive the refund either. The dealer also claimed that some of the phones were faulty and needed replacement or a refund.
